This study points out the need for an internal model of a speaker and an utterance situation, i.e., a model of the "speaker-world", in a theoretical treatment of natural language understanding, especially in that of discourse understanding. A kind of indexical and schema-type expression is proposed to deal with the internal representation of the "speaker-world", and to account for certain types of cohesive relations in discourse.
